Diffusing the light that is produced by your flash can greatly enhance the quality of the digital pictures you take. It gives your pictures a more distributed light source, creating warmer pictures with very little sharp contrast. Here is an on-the-spot improvisation to diffuse light in digital pictures.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A piece of tissue
  • Scissors (optional)
  • A small piece of scotch tape
  1. Step 1

Use your scissors to cut out a small piece of tissue. The tissue should be large enough to cover the flash on your camera. If you do not have scissors, you can simply tear it to be a small piece. In the event that you have no tissue available, a thin napkin will also work.

  2. Step 2

Holding the tissue over the flash on your digital camera, use a small piece of scotch tape to secure the top side, leaving the tissue hanging over the front of your flash.

  3. Step 3

Take a digital picture. With the tissue in front of the flash, the light is diffused rather than being cast directly onto your subject, which eliminates a lot of unflattering shadow.

  4. Step 4

Another technique is to cut a strip of tracing paper that is wide enough to cover your flash, but a little longer than needed.

  5. Step 5

Tape one end below the flash bulb, then arch the paper over the bulb before securing the other end to the top of the camera.
