If you have a textured ceiling that is showing some wear and tear, you might decide to give it a face lift by painting it. If you have the know-how and proper equipment, painting a textured ceiling is a job you can do yourself.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Move as much furniture and other objects out of the room as you possibly can. Cover the floor and any furnishings left in the room with plastic sheeting.

  2. Step 2

Using the masking tape, tape the entire room where the wall meets the ceiling. The tape should be entirely on the wall, not the ceiling. This will help stop accidental painting on the walls.

  3. Step 3

If you are using a spray gun, start at the areas that are most difficult to get at. Find the proper distance for you to spray from, so that the paint is neither too thick nor too thin.

  4. Step 4

If you are using a paint roller, start out rolling about six inches from the wall, and roll the paint towards the wall.

  5. Step 5

Use a paint brush to finish the edges of the ceiling and fan out any areas that were painted too thick.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many hardware stores and equipment rental companies rent paint sprayers. Consider renting one as spraying is physically much easier than rolling.
  • If you are considering removing the texture from your ceiling, contact a professional. In older houses, textured ceilings may include asbestos.
