One of the most popular tricks in skateboarding is the railstand. This is where a skater gains speed on concrete surface and approaches a stair rail. At the last moment the skater pops an ollie and gains air and then lands with the nose of the board on the rail. The skater balances precariously for a moment before hopping off the rail and landing the board on the ground. When skating a half pipe a rail stand is also a common trick, although the skater must be more precise and able to land on curved surface without losing their balance and falling. These steps will teach you how to properly do a railstand on a skateboard.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Skateboard
  • Protective gear
  • Rail
  • Concrete surface
  • Balance
  • Practice
  1. Step 1

Practice your ollies. You will first need to be able to ollie at least two feet in the air. This will take some practice. Try jumping a little higher when you ollie and sliding your forward foot up the board faster, this will increase the height that you gain.

  2. Step 2

Get accustomed to nose slides. Nose slides are the best way to practice and get ready to perform a railstand. Approach a small curb at decent speed and ollie with your nose forward. Land the nose of the board on the curb and slide, hop off when you feel the board losing its traction.

  3. Step 3

Find a good rail. Finding a good rail is up to you. However it is recommended that you find one with plenty of smooth concrete nearby to gain speed. Also, do not attempt a rail stand a rail that has too many stairs, if you fall you will tumble those stairs.

  4. Step 4

Properly execute a railstand. Approach the desired rail and gain speed. Ollie at the last moment before you hit the rail. Lean inwards with your body as your front ollie foot angles the nose of the board towards the rail. Once you grab the rail with the nose of the board shift the weight of your body backwards slightly to counteract the forward motion and perform a railstand.
