Garbage disposals are used to eliminate food based waste that would rot quickly and make a mess in your garbage cans. Some of the things that are put down garbage disposals are soup, leftover remains from plates and pots and old rotting food from the refrigerator. Needless to say, the garbage disposal can be pretty disgusting and gross. Here are some tips to you to keep your garbage disposal clean.

From Quick Guide: Cleaning Garbage Disposals
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Whenever you put a food item in the garbage disposal, first turn on the cold water, and then the garbage disposal. Allow the water to wash the old food items down the garbage disposal and keep the water running until you hear that the garbage disposal is no longer grinding food items.

  2. Step 2

Never put starchy foods into your garbage disposal as it will turn into glue and will not only make your garbage disposal very dirty, but may also break it.

  3. Step 3

Clean the garbage disposal regularly using ice and rock salt. This combination allows the garbage disposal to self clean as it grinds the ice and salt.

  4. Step 4

Clean the garbage disposal pipes by putting a stopper in your sink, filling your sink with water, and removing the plug while running the garbage disposal.

  5. Step 5

Freshen your garbage disposal by putting citrus peels into the garbage disposal on a regular basis. Take citrus fruit that is too old to eat and place it on the windowsill. Then every evening after doing dishes, cut up one old piece of citrus fruit and run it through the garbage disposal.

Tips & Warnings
  • Freshen your garbage disposal every night.
  • Clean your garbage disposal every week with ice and salt.
  • Never put starchy foods in your garbage disposal.
  • Never put your hand in your garbage disposal.
