1
Look for clumps of trees and underbrush. Sticks and branches will fall from the trees and get lodged in the underbrush, sometimes obscuring them from view. In many cases the wood will be nicely dried out and ideal for burning.

2
Bring a tarp or twine with you. You can only hold so much firewood and tinder in your arms. It is recommended that you bring a tarp to hold the wood that you gather or a ball of twine so you can tie clumps of firewood together for easy transporting back to the campsite.

Gather wood that is dried out and ideal for burning. An easy way to test wood is to shave off a piece of the bark with a pocket knife. If it is green or has too much moisture discard it as it will not burn. When gathering tinder you want dry and very brittle wood. Simply snap a twig from the tinder; if it snaps easily it is the right tinder, otherwise discard and keep looking.

Look for fallen trees for ideal firewood. Dried brush thickets offer some of the best tinder you will find.
