While rugged, hardcore campers may prefer to have nothing more than a sleeping bag and an open sky over their heads, some people prefer to have a degree of comfort added to their camping experience. A basic way of adding this comfort is to pick a quality camping air mattress to bring on your trip. Using a camping air mattress is not only more comfortable, but it is also better for your back and generally helps to create a more pleasant camping experience.

From Quick Guide: Air Mattress Basics
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take a close look at your other camping equipment, particularly your tent. Measure the floor space of your tent to make sure that the camping air mattress you pick will be a good fit.

  2. Step 2

Consider how many people will be sleeping on the mattress. Sure, you may be able to fit an enormous mattress in your tent, but if only 1 to 2 people will be using the air mattress, then you may want to select a smaller model.

  3. Step 3

Think about your normal camping locations. If you normally go to a formal campground that has access to electric plugs, you may want to pick a camping air mattress with an electronic inflate feature. If you normally camp in the wilderness, you will probably want to pick a camping air mattress that has either a hand pump or a battery powered inflate feature.

  4. Step 4

Check the pricing. You can usually find the same item available at different prices when you look at different stores. Once you have identified the camping air mattress of your choice, call a few different stores to ask about the price.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to keep a patch kit on hand in case your camping air mattress gets punctured or develops a slow leak.
  • When camping with children, make sure they understand that they can not dive onto the mattress, as this can cause a slow leak in the seams.
