CD-ROMs are used in so many applications; knowing how to care for them is important. These instructions apply to the cleaning of a DVD as well. These instructions are especially important for people who use rental movie DVDs and can introduce dust and grease into their players if not cleaned properly. Sometimes a dirty CD or DVD can be mistaken for a scratched one. Just remember before using any cleaning methods that the plastic polycarbonate coating is very thin and delicate and can be easily damaged.

Instructions
1
Hold the CD from the center with one or more fingers on the outside edge. Never place fingers on the surface. Wipe from the center outwards in a straight line with a clean soft cloth. Never wipe in circles as this could scratch the surface.
2
If there are still greasy fingerprints, then dip the cloth in a diluted solution of dish soap and water. Squeeze out and again wipe in a radial motion, from the center out. Allow the CD or DVD to dry completely before reinserting it into the player.
3
For stubborn spots, a little isopropyl alcohol can be used, wiping it in a radial motion from the center out and allowing the surface to dry before reinserting.
4
Finally, if the surface has been cleaned and there are still marks on the surface, the plastic polycarbonate coating could be scratched. A simple car wax that is made for clear coating can be tried. Use a small amount and polish in the radial motion described above. Try the CD in the player to see if it is any better, if not try a little more. Better to do too little than too much. There are also products on the market made for this application.
Tips & Warnings
If you notice your CD or DVD is acting like it has been scratched, make a copy of it.
Never use petroleum-based cleaners like acetone as they will ruin the plastic polycarbonate coating.
