Depending on if you're in a traditional, classic tap dance class or your studio taps in Broadway's "Stomp" style, learn how to dress appropriately for tap dancing with the tips in this article.

From Quick Guide: Dancewear 101
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

If you are taking tap dancing classes at a traditional studio, most teachers will want you to wear a black leotard and black tights, or a black leotard and pink tights with your tap shoes. Call ahead to find out the appropriate attire.

  2. Step 2

If your tap dancing teacher is more lenient, make sure that what you wear to class is comfortable and allows you to move around. Wear dark colored dance pants or yoga pants, and pair them with a logo-less tank top.

  3. Step 3

Absolutely do not wear jeans. Unless they're baggy, jeans can restrict your movement, and even then they can get in your way. So, for guys, throw on some loose-fitting cargo pants or sweatpants and a plain t-shirt for class or performance.

  4. Step 4

If you want to buy new dance clothes, check out sports clothing stores and stores that sell dancewear in your area. Most importantly though, find out what clothing your dance teacher will and will not allow for class. That way you will not waste your money and time.
