How to Pick Hiking Boots

So you want to by a pair of hiking boots. To find just the right pair, there are several steps you should take before parting with your hard-earned money. Or else, you’ll find a pair, but you will soon be looking for replacements because they simply don’t do the job.

1. Understand how hiking boots are made. All manufacturers start with a “last” and some of them fit much better than others. When you find a manufacturer’s “last” that is comfortable, you’re half way there. The upper is then placed on the last and is sewn in place. The more the stitching, the longer the boot will last. The thickness of the leather on the upper is called “gauge.” Generally, the thicker the leather, the more the boot will cost. Also, it makes a difference which side of the leather is exposed, either smooth or rough. A nice looking pair might appear smooth, but they are subject to scuffing and soon will look tacky. If you’re planning to do heavy-duty hiking, rough leather exposed may be the better option.

2. Choose the right sole. Hard soles do really well on grass and dirt, while softer soles are better for rocks and unpredictable terrain. If you do both types of hiking, you may need two pairs of boots.

3. Decide on the weight of your hiking boots. Heavyweights are about 5 pounds each and are built to withstand the most challenging hike. Middleweights are about half as heavy and are terrific for backpacking. Lightweights are usually less than 2 ½ pounds and look like running shoes. Obviously, you should choose the weight based on the type of hiking you do.

• Never buy hiking boot without trying them on, first. There are almost imperceptible differences in size, so the chances are great that you will not be happy with your purchase. If you are compelled to buy your boots online or out of a catalog, go to your local shoe store first and make note of the manufacturer, style number and size of the hiking boots you want.
