Although it may sound like an easy decision to make, picking a camping lantern is actually something that you should put serious thought into. Picking the wrong lantern could very well leave you in the dark on your camping trip, while picking the right camping lantern can provide you with maximum light. The right lantern can even save you money in the long run, especially if you camp on a regular basis. Here is how to pick a camping lantern.

From Quick Guide: Camping Equipment Basics
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start by thinking about the type of camping you normally do. If you typically drive to your campsite, then a heavy camping lantern full of fuel will work just fine. If you plan to hike to your campsite, you will probably want something that is lightweight and durable.

  2. Step 2

Examine your other camping equipment. If you have cook stoves or other items that use a particular type of fuel, you may wish to pick a camping lantern that uses the same type of fuel.

  3. Step 3

Choose your globe. Camping Lanterns usually come with either glass globes or metal mesh globes. The metal mesh globes are rugged and durable, and may be more suited to hiking. Glass globes cast more light, but glass is delicate and may be better suited for drive-up camping.

  4. Step 4

Consider whether or not you will be using the camping lantern inside a tent. If so, it is highly recommended that you pick a flameless camping lantern that runs on rechargeable batteries. This is a basic fire safety decision that should not be overlooked.

Tips & Warnings
  • When it comes to brightness, fuel lanterns are far superior to rechargeable lights. Camping lanterns that are powered by fuel can reach an output of as much as 235 watts, which is probably more light than you have in your living room.
