Your friend or family member is getting married, and you have been assigned one of the most important responsibilities of the day--giving the wedding toast. If you have never given a toast before or are just nervous about speaking in public, follow these simple tips on how to make a wedding toast and you will be able to give a memorable speech.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Note cards (to help you in case you forget your speech)
  • Champagne glass for toast
  1. Step 1

Consider the couple. Remember that this speech is supposed to be special for the bride and groom. Ask yourself what you can say that will honor them and their future happiness together. They may be the kind of couple who can take a joke mixed into the speech, or you may need to keep it sweet and simple.

  2. Step 2

Recall good memories. Now is definitely not the time to bring up past infidelities, even if they are funny. Focus on some unique memories you have of the couple that truly show how they love each other. You may even want to recap a sweet anecdote about something the groom did for the bride. Just be respectful to keep any secrets they told you.

  3. Step 3

Keep it short. You're probably going to be giving your speech right before the dance floor is opened, so don't ramble. Everyone is antsy to get on with the partying and you don't want to be the one holding them back.

  4. Step 4

Be unique. Wedding speeches are given every week, so it's easy to just copy someone else's off the Internet. Instead, try to find some unique facts about the couple that you can share with everyone.

  5. Step 5

Demonstrate your love for the couple. No matter what you say in your speech, what matters most is that you show the couple that you love them and wish them the best for their future. Being respectful and thoughtful will really go a long way in making your speech one that they won't soon forget.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask the bride's and groom's parents for some sweet, but lesser known tidbits regarding the couple.
  • Share experiences you have had with the couple that you know makes them a perfect match.
  • Don't forget to carry notecards in your pocket with your speech on them in case you get stage fright.
  • Don't worry if you get nervous; you're among family and friends.
