It used to be that if you wanted to send a large file like a video or audio clip over the net, you could roll the dice by attaching it to an email, and just hope that you didn't exceed any megabyte quotas or have your message end up caught in a spam filter, or you could setup an FTP, but for your average web user, that's a foreign acronym. The folks at YouSendIt think they have the answer to the quandry. Here's how it works:

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet Connection
  1. Step 1

Visit the YouSendIt website at yousendit.com. Ignore the "Send a File Now" form, as it will take you directly to the sign up page, and you'll have to fill out the same form again. Instead, click on the "sign up" tab in the upper left.

  2. Step 2

On the Sign Up page is where you'll find the free account option or "Lite" account, which limits transfers to files of 100 MB or less, with a monthly transfer cap of one GB. If you plan to send a lot or larger files, consider signing up for one of the paid account options with fewer restrictions.

  3. Step 3

After you've selected and created your account, you'll be prompted to download the YouSendIt software. Select the folder you'd like to download the packaged file to, and hit Save.

  4. Step 4

Install the YouSendIt software and launch it. If you aren't logged into your account automatically, you may need to enter your login information.

  5. Step 5

To send a file, enter the email address of the person you'd like to send to. followed by a subject line and note for the email that will be sent to the recipient along with a link to download the file. You can select whether to send files or folders or both. Make sure the correct files and folders you want to send are displayed at the bottom of the dialog.

  6. Step 6

Click on the "send options" tab to select options like return receipt or password protection. Not all options may be available with a lite account.

  7. Step 7

Click the "Send it" button and notify the recipient that the file is on its way!

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask the recipient to check her spam folder is the file doesn't show up within a few minutes.
