Many expectant parents choose to take a Lamaze class in the second or third trimester of their pregnancy. The classes help a couple prepare mentally and physically for the upcoming birth of their new child by educating them on what to expect during labor and delivery. Lamaze classes also help a couple bond and learn to work as a team. Many men are even more nervous than women about the role they will play in labor and delivery. Lamaze helps them to better understand the process.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Expectant mother
  • Birthing coach
  • Phone book
  • Water
  • Snacks
  • Pillows
  • Pen
  • Notebook
  1. Step 1

Select a birth coach. A mother-to-be does not have to choose the father of her child as her birth coach. It is perfectly acceptable to pick a mother, sister, best friend or anyone that will inspire strength and a sense of peace during the process of labor and delivery.

  2. Step 2

Find local Lamaze classes. Your doctor or local maternity ward can give you information about signing up for Lamaze classes in your area. Often, they can also be found in the phone book. Find out when and where your classes will be held. Also ask about the best place to park, since walking during the last few weeks of pregnancy can sometimes be challenging. Most Lamaze classes meet for two hour sessions one night a week for 6 to 8 consecutive weeks. There is usually a small tuition fee. Be sure your class is taught by a certified and experienced professional.

  3. Step 3

Dress comfortably. Lamaze classes often consist of two segments: a learning segment that involves watching videos or using textbooks and a physical section where stretching techniques, deep breathing and massage techniques are taught. Be sure to dress in comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily without feeling self-conscious.

  4. Step 4

Gather your supplies. On the night of your first class, bring pillows for comfort, some water to drink and a snack in case you get hungry. A pen and notebook are also handy for taking notes during class.

  5. Step 5

Go to class. Now that you've picked your birth coach, signed up for class, changed into comfortable clothes, and gathered up the things you'll need, it's time to go to your first class. Enjoy the precious bonding time with your birth coach and your future son or daughter.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many people think Lamaze is only for women that don't want to use pain medications or an epidural during delivery, but that's not the case. Lamaze is for every pregnant woman. No matter what kind of birth process you intend to have, Lamaze will teach you techniques and give you information that will help you through labor and delivery.
  • Some people will tell you that Lamaze is useless because labor pains are very intense. Even if it only helps you slightly, isn't it worth a try?
  • Be sure to find an experienced and certified Lamaze coach.
  • Consult your doctor before signing up for Lamaze or any other physical activity.
