Things You'll Need:

  • Scrub brush
  • Hand vacuum
  • White cleaning towels
  • Club soda

Removing Red Wine Stains from Carpet

  1. Step 1

There is no need for your party to stop if someone spills red wine on your carpet. Just grab a canister of salt (have one handy even if you normally use a salt grinder) and cover the still wet wine stain with a mound of salt and go back to your party.

  2. Step 2

After few minutes to a half hour, brush the salt from the stain and remove the salt with a hand vacuum.

  3. Step 3

If there is still a stain present, saturate the stained area with club soda, and then blot it with the white towel. A great way to draw a stain out of carpet is to place the towel on the dampened stain and then stand on the towel.

  4. Remove Red Wine From Clothing

  5. Step 1

You can use the carpet method to remove stains from clothing, if you can take off the clothing item. However, in most cases, red wine will be spilled on clothing items you are wearing.

  6. Step 2

Chase the red wine with white. If you need to remove your wine stain and still continue wearing the item, you need to pour white wine onto the red wine stain, as it miraculously removes the red wine stain.

  7. Step 3

Dab any remaining stain with club soda and a white napkin or soft cloth.

  8. Step 4

Squeeze any moisture from the item by pressing paper towels or cloths to both sides of the fabric.

  9. Step 5

As soon as possible, remember to use stain treatment on the item and launder it as usual so that the stain does not shadow back later.

on 10/16/2008 The salt on carpet red wine spill works like a charm. I have even left the salt on overnight and there was no evidence of a spot remaining.
