Stoneware is a type of cooking dish make from clay that is kiln-fired at a high temperature. Cooking in stoneware mimics professional cooking as many professional ovens are lined with a similar brick material that equalizes heat distribution. Stoneware cookware comes in the form of pizza or baking stones and baking dishes. Because stoneware is different from metal or glass cookware, cleaning stoneware is different from cleaning regular pots and pans.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Nylon scraper or brush with stiff bristles
  1. Step 1

Season stoneware before using it. To season your stoneware you need to spray it with a vegetable oil for the first few uses. You can also bake high fat items on the stoneware the first few times you use it. You will notice that your stoneware has developed what resembles a non stick finish when it is fully seasoned.

  2. Step 2

Scrape any stuck-on food from the stoneware using a stoneware scraper, which is just a small piece of plastic that comes with the stoneware. You can also use a nylon bristle scrub brush.

  3. Step 3

Clean your stoneware using hot water and a sponge only. Do not use soap as it will break down the seasoning (which keeps items from sticking to the stone).

  4. Step 4

Place your stoneware in the oven at 200 degrees for a few minutes if you feel your stoneware is not clean enough, as this will kill any germs or bacteria. You can then turn off your oven and allow the stoneware to cool before putting it away.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not use dish soap, a self-cleaning oven, or any kind of oven cleaner on your baking stone.
  • If anyone in your home has food allergies, do not cook food in a stoneware dish that has held the food they are allergic to.
