Tasty Turkey

Turkey does not have to be dull, dry and boring. It is fairly easy to keep a turkey juicy, moist and tender, both during and after cooking.

From Quick Guide: Turkey 101
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stuff the turkey with the bread or stuffing of your choice. Even if you do not eat the stuffing, it will help keep your turkey moist, juicy and tasty during cooking. You will need to cook it a bit longer so it heats evenly and thoroughly.

  2. Step 2

Poke holes throughout the turkey so the juices can drain into it. Put bacon or similar strips over it, then cover and put into the oven.

  3. Step 3

Baste the turkey every 30 minutes during oven cooking. Keep the temperature low and the bird covered until the last 15 to 30 minutes to brown the skin only.

  4. Step 4

Try turning the temperature down to 250 and roasting it slower for a longer period of time. Roast about 15 minutes per pound. Turkey is done when internal temperature reaches190 degrees with a quick read meat thermometer.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use an oven and meat thermometer to measure temperatures of the turkey and the oven to make sure you are cooking at the temperature you think you set the oven to.
  • Another way the turkey is sure to stay moist and juicy is to cook it in a stand alone in a covered Nesco roaster. The heat in these is more even and direct and you can control it and keep an eye on it better.
  • Never serve undercooked poultry.
