Step 1
Put on your shoes as you normally would and prepare to tie them.
-
Step 2
Pull the laces taut and hold the tips of the shoelaces upwards, so you can see if they are the correct length. Since longer laces may cause you to trip over them, you may need to purchase shorter laces. The best shoelace length for adult shoes depends on the number of eyelets in your shoes. On average, adult shoes will have 8 or 10 eyelet holes, which means your shoestrings should be 54 inches (8 holes) or 72 inches (10 holes).
-
Step 3
Adjust your laces. After checking your shoelaces, if they are too long and you don't want to buy new ones, simply cut the ends (the aglets) until you have a proper length, and then seal the ends by dripping candle wax on them and rolling them gently between your fingers.
-
Step 4
Begin tying your shoelaces as usual, leaving the bows slightly longer than normal. This will allow you to then grasp the bows of the shoelaces in each hand and tie them again, making a double knot. Make sure that you don't make the loops too big because they will droop over your shoes and you may step on them and trip.
-
Step 5
Pull the knot tight and you are finished. Cloth laces should stay tied indefinitely or until you untie them yourself.

on 3/28/2009 Good info on the lace length.A double knot can make it harder to untie your shoes. Try the double-over shoe tie. It's easy, it won't come undone, it's easy to untie, and it looks nice! => http://www.ehow.com/how_4860440_tie-doubleover-shoe-tie.html

on 7/1/2008 The best way to stop laces coming untied is to buy Lace Stick. This is a treatment that when applied coats your laces, binding them together so that they your shoes stay tight and laces tied. Lace Stick doesn't affect the untying of you shoes when you are ready to take them off. It really works and is great for anyone that has this problem - athletes, kids, workers, seniors, etc.
