How to Disable File and Printer Sharing on Your Local Network

If you're in a less secure environment, you might want to disable File and Printer Sharing so that there'll be a lower chance of being hacked. It only takes a few simple steps.

Things You'll Need

• Microsoft Windows XP

Instructions

1. 

   Go to Network Connections in Windows XP. You might find this when you click on Start and scroll down to the Connect To option.

2. 

   Right-click on the connection you wish to make the change for. Choose Properties.

3. 

   In the page that pops up, uncheck the box for File and Printer Sharing.

4. Once that is done, click on OK and restart your connection.

5. When you connect again, others will no longer have access to your local files, folders and printers.

Tips & Warnings

• This increased step in security will ensure you won't allow anyone to snoop in on your files.

• Remember to turn this option back on when you're in a secure environment, like at home.
