If you are wondering what that green man is in the lower right hand corner of your screen, you are just a few quick steps from finding out and being able to send messages to family and friends. You can also share documents, activate screen cams, have fun with icons and more.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access
  • MSN Messenger

Get a Microsoft Windows .Net Passport (or Windows Live ID) using the link shown in Resources below. If you already have an MSN sign-in you can skip this step. Or, if you already have MSN Messenger installed on your computer, then you will be able to start using the next steps. Most computers have some type of Windows instant messaging program preinstalled.

  2. Step 2

Install the software if it is not found on your computer, once you have a user ID and a password. Follow the on-screen instructions and prompts.

  3. Step 3

Double-click to run MSN Messenger. You can set it up to remember your username (email address) and password automatically or just your user name. You can also have it run as soon as you start Windows.

  4. Step 4

Look for people to add to your address book. Often times, Windows Messenger can detect them or pull them out of your contacts in your email address or Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express contacts. You can also manually add names, addresses and any other pertinent contact information.

  5. Step 5

Alter the settings to make it look like you are offline or invisible if you do not want to be disturbed. It will normally do this automatically after you are away for 5 to 10 minutes. Go into Tools and then the Options menu for more choices. You can also have it not start automatically so your computer will start faster. Click on "Tools," "Options" and then uncheck the box for it to start automatically. If you do not wish for others to see you online, simply uncheck those boxes as well.

  6. Step 6

Click on "Actions" and "Send an instant message." Start typing in the space below and add emoticons (smiley faces) to your conversation if you prefer.

Tips & Warnings
  • You do not need to be an MSN Internet subscriber to gain access to the instant messaging software.
  • Chat with only people you know and trust.
  • Instant message conversations are rarely private.
