Discover Transylvania Romania on a Shoestring Budget

Transylvania is one of the most romanticized cities in Eastern Europe. Made famous by Bran Stocker in Dracula, Transylvania has a lot more to offer than just its castles. A large city with a significant Roma (gypsy) population, Transylvania can be expensive for visitors who don’t learn in advance how to stay clear of tourist traps.

Instructions

    • 1

Set some money aside to visit Bran Castle, the place that inspired Bran Stoker’s Dracula. The castle is not only the main attraction in Transylvania, but also one of its most distinctive sights. Finding the place itself will probably be expensive, though, since you will have to take a combination of buses and taxis to get there or join an organized tour.

Find accommodations in advance. Romania in general, but especially Transylvania, is known for its expensive hotels. Hostels do not abound, but a few can be found in the city near the center. Especially famous are The Old Town Hostel Sibiu and the Hostel Cluj-Napoca, both located in an old part of town, near the most important attractions and within easy access to public transportation. If you prefer a hotel, book online for better prices and a chance to find special offers.

Use public transportation as much as possible. While you may need to take taxis to reach some faraway attractions, most of the most important sightings, such as the Astra National Museum Complex (complete with dozens of wood and stone structures), the Clock Tower and the Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization. Trains, both local and long-distance, reach every corner of the city.

    • 4

Make time to explore the countryside. Transylvania is surrounded by some magnificent open spaces that are free to explore. You can take the train or a local bus out of the city in the morning and spend the day walking around pathways and hills. In summer, remember to take food along for a quick picnic.

Call the Romanian National Tourist Office at +40 (0)21 314 9957 to find out what festivals are running in Transylvania at any given time. The Mount Gaina Maidens Fair (July), Lumberjack Day (August) and The Sibiu Medieval Festival (August) are all extremely popular and a great way to get to know the history and folklore of Romania. They are also a great way to enjoy the country for little or no money, as most festivals charge no entrance fee.

Tips & Warnings

  • Transylvania has a very cold and humid winter, with lots of snow and slippery roads. While all attractions remain open, some may be difficult to access.
