Instructions

    • 1

Research what vegetables are appropriate for the climate in your area. This is especially important if you are planning for an outdoor vegetable garden rather than one grown in containers. If you live in an area prone to frost or strong rains or winds, you will need to look for vegetables that do not break easily. Plants that grow near the floor, rather than vertically, are your best choices in these cases.

    • 2

Decide on a small variety of vegetables rather than planting only one or two seeds of each species. This is better for your soil (you should alternate plants each year to protect the quality and richness) and also increases the chances for success, especially if this is your first garden and you have no experience growing different species.

    • 3

Fertilize the soil at least a week before the actual planting. You can do with manure, plant food pills or commercial soil. If you are preparing an outdoor garden, make sure you mix the soil well and allow it to air before you turn it and mix again. Repeat this every two to three days until the time of planting.

    • 4

Plant seeds of vegetables that have some similarity, such as the same growing time, the same needs for soil and care or the same required amount of space during growth. This will make it easier to handle pests and to plan harvesting and replanting.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid chemicals to protect your garden. Instead, look for organic pest control options.
