Research what vegetables are appropriate for the climate in your area. This is especially important if you are planning for an outdoor vegetable garden rather than one grown in containers. If you live in an area prone to frost or strong rains or winds, you will need to look for vegetables that do not break easily. Plants that grow near the floor, rather than vertically, are your best choices in these cases.

Decide on a small variety of vegetables rather than planting only one or two seeds of each species.
