Begin by taking stock of what kind of decor you have in your home. Are you country or shabby chic? Are you modern or art nouveau? No matter what your personal style is, there is a creative solution for plant containers that will match your tastes.

Antique shoes make a great planter.Next, approach your search with an open mind. Any item that can hold soil can be made into a waterproof planter that allows drainage.

A bedpan makes a unique and comical planter.Go to your local flea market or antique store. Look for items that will match the above criteria. Straw hats, old fish tanks, shoes, purses, tool boxes, lunch boxes and even old typewriters can be made into plant containers depending on your decor and interests. Once you find an item you want to make into a planter, simply line the item with a heavy duty garbage bag, place some pebbles and potting soil in it and you are in business.

Not a do-it-yourself-er? Think about your special interest and do an Internet search. For instance, if you collect Buddhas, an Internet search for a Buddha planter turns up several results. You should easily be able to find a container to match nearly any interest online, and if not, you will be able to find some special item that you could turn into a planter.

Once you have your unique planter ready, choose the right plant to complete the look. Small containers should hold a nice ivy or small, compact plant, whereas a larger container, such as a barbecue grill, could nicely hold a collection of cactus or aloe. Tall spiky plants are a good fit for more shallow pots. If you are not sure, simply place the potted plant in the container and step back to take a look. As always, follow the directions on the plant for placement within your house.
