Houseplants can add life and color to the interior of your home. Finding the best container for your rooted friend means more than determining the right size and depth. If you want your plants to be not only a pleasant part of your decor, but a personal statement as well, getting a unique planter is the way to go. Not sure how to find a creative and unique container for your plant? Here are some great ideas to get you going in the right direction.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Access to antique stores or flea markets
  • Potting soil
  • Heavy duty garbage bags or liners
  • Pebbles
  • Variety of houseplants
  • Computer with Internet access
  • Credit card
  1. Step 1

Begin by taking stock of what kind of decor you have in your home. Are you country or shabby chic? Are you modern or art nouveau? No matter what your personal style is, there is a creative solution for plant containers that will match your tastes.

  2. Step 2
Antique shoes make a great planter.

Next, approach your search with an open mind. Any item that can hold soil can be made into a waterproof planter that allows drainage.

  3. Step 3

Go to your local flea market or antique store. Look for items that will match the above criteria. Straw hats, old fish tanks, shoes, purses, tool boxes, lunch boxes and even old typewriters can be made into plant containers depending on your decor and interests. Once you find an item you want to make into a planter, simply line the item with a heavy duty garbage bag, place some pebbles and potting soil in it and you are in business.

  4. Step 4

Not a do-it-yourself-er? Think about your special interest and do an Internet search. For instance, if you collect Buddhas, an Internet search for a Buddha planter turns up several results. You should easily be able to find a container to match nearly any interest online, and if not, you will be able to find some special item that you could turn into a planter.

  5. Step 5

Once you have your unique planter ready, choose the right plant to complete the look. Small containers should hold a nice ivy or small, compact plant, whereas a larger container, such as a barbecue grill, could nicely hold a collection of cactus or aloe. Tall spiky plants are a good fit for more shallow pots. If you are not sure, simply place the potted plant in the container and step back to take a look. As always, follow the directions on the plant for placement within your house.

Tips & Warnings
  • Need more ideas or have an idea but aren't sure how to make it work? Go to a garden store (not a big megamart with a garden center) and talk to the staff there. They will be able to tell you what you need and how to make it into a container.
  • Be sure all planters have some form of catch tray underneath them for watering overflow.
