Slip Away From a Wedding Early

Weddings can be fun, or they can be mind-numbing, depending on the people involved, the occasion and even the location. If you have been invited to a wedding but don’t want to stay longer than necessary, there are always ways to slip out of it without looking rude or offending anybody.

Instructions

    • 1

Let the bride and groom know in advance that you will be leaving early. That can be done on the day of the party or at the time you RSVP the invitation. Just a quick explanation--such as, “I’ll be happy to come, but I’m afraid I have to leave early”--should be enough, unless you have a very close relationship with the couple, in which case you may be asked why there's such a rush.

    • 2

Tell the couple you have to go home to your children. Many weddings nowadays are child-free, which means you probably had to get a babysitter to stay at home with your children.

    • 3

Explain that you had a long, difficult day, or say that you need to wake up early the next morning. This will probably not work if the wedding is on a Saturday night, since most people don’t work on Sundays.

    • 4

Fake illness. While lying is not necessarily the most appropriate thing, it can help you get out of a wedding you are attending just out of obligation. Don’t use this on a friend’s wedding; they deserve better.

Tips & Warnings

  • Decide whether it is worth it at all to attend. Weddings are expensive affairs for the host. If you intend to slip out after just an hour or two, maybe you shouldn’t attend at all and save the hosts the money.
