Not Act Like a Tourist in NYC
Not Act Like a Tourist in NYC

Tourists are everywhere in the Big Apple but with some preparation and know-how, at least on your visit you won't look like one.

From Quick Guide: Tourist Information Cheatsheet
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Subway Map/ Computer with Internet
  • NFT
  • NYC Guide Book
  1. Step 1

Memorization is key. Before you go look at an NYC subway and bus line map. They can be found online under the "maps" heading (see Resources). Knowing which trains and buses to take makes you look like you have lived there your whole life.

  2. Step 2

Checking out an NYC guide book can also be helpful. Know where you want to go and plan a route so you won't get lost. This is also helpful if you will only be in the city for a short time.

  3. Step 3

A New Yorker's secret isn't that they know where everything is, it's that they have an NFT. The NFT or Not For Tourists is a guide book that has a map in the back and is full of tips as well as important phone numbers and directions to different destinations.

  4. Step 4

Act like a New Yorker. The idea is to look the part, so don't carry big cameras around your neck and ask people on the street to take your picture. Of course you can take pictures and enjoy the city but try and be discreet. The object of this is to look like a local but take in all NYC has to offer.

  5. Step 5

Don't panic. If all else fails and you get lost or need help, don't be afraid to ask. Not acting like a tourist really just means being prepared and lots of times learning what "tourist traps" to avoid. Remember nothing is free and most people are trying to make a buck. Common sense and a little know-how can get you anywhere.
