If you are getting a message that says your antivirus software has run out or is about to expire, you need to renew or replace it to keep your computer safe from viruses. It's quick and practical, even if you are unsure about computer language and only know basic functions.

From Quick Guide: Norton Antivirus Guide
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Click on the pop-up message in the lower right-hand corner if you get one that states your antivirus subscription is about to expire. This will help you renew you current antivirus subscription and keep your computer security the same. Follow the steps on-screen; you will most likely need a credit card for this, as it is probably a paid subscription.

  2. Step 2

Remove the antivirus software completely if the subscription is expensive or if you do not wish to go with the same company. To do this go to the Control Panel, choose "Add or Remove Programs" and look for the antivirus software. You can sometimes remove it by selecting "Uninstall" from the Start Menu; to do this, go to "Start," "Programs" and choose your current antivirus program to see if there is an uninstall command in this menu.

  3. Step 3

Add a new antivirus program once the old one is removed from your computer. You can either download from the Internet or purchase a CD from a store. Very often your Internet company will let you download security software for free from their website. You do this by logging into your account and accessing it from the help or software screen. There is no charge for this software.

  4. Step 4

Consider using AVG, CA, Norton, TrendMicro and McAfee virus programs (see Resources below).

  5. Step 5

Download the updates immediately and restart your computer. Run a virus scan, and be sure and set it up so it will scan your computer every week automatically.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the antivirus program won't uninstall, there are often removal tools that can be downloaded for free online.
  • Save your license key in case you need to reinstall the program at some point.
  • Do not select the "auto renew" option if you are renewing online.
  • Never run two different antivirus programs at the same time. Always remove the old one first.
