Digital cameras often come with trial photo software to help you upload and manage your pictures on your computer. This software usually has limited options and storage, unless you pay to upgrade to the full version. You may be surprised to find that you don't need this brand-specific photo software to upload photos--in fact, you don't need any special software at all. Read on for instructions on how to transfer pictures from your camera to your computer, without that special software. Note: these instructions were written for a PC with Windows XP, but should be easily translatable for other operating systems. Read on to learn how to transfer pictures from a camera to a computer without any software.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fully charged digital camera
  • USB cable
  • USB port on computer
  • Memory card reader (optional)
  1. Step 1

Connect your USB cable to the USB jack in your camera.

  2. Step 2

Connect your USB cable to the USB port in your computer. This may be in the front or back of your CPU, and is generally labeled.

  3. Step 3

    Turn camera on.

  4. Step 4

Go to "My Computer" on your PC, or wherever you can see all available drives on your computer.

  5. Step 5

Locate the drive for your camera. It may list your camera or, as highlighted in this photo, the memory card for your camera.

  6. Step 6

Double-click the camera drive. This should bring up the folders stored on your camera. You may have to click through one or two folders to get your actual images folder.

  7. Step 7

Try option one. Click the images folder to highlight it. Then select the "Edit" feature, and "Move to folder." Here you can select precisely which folder on your computer you want to store your pictures in. Moving the folder will remove the images from your camera. Choose the "Copy to Folder" option if you want the images to remain on your camera.

  8. Step 8

Consider option two. Double-click the images folder.

  9. Step 9

Click on a particular image and use the "File" button for options, or as shown in the photo, right-click the photo for those same options. Here you can preview images to see which ones are worth saving, cut and paste the images into different folders, or delete unwanted images. See Tips section.

  10. Step 10

Once the photos are stored on your computer, you can use them however you want--as wallpaper for your desktop, to upload onto a website, or to email to family and friends.

Tips & Warnings
  • As you can see in the image for Step 9, you can also send individual images into the photo editing software of your choice. You're not forced to use the photo software that came with your camera.
  • Another option for getting photos from your camera to your computer is to use a memory card reader. This is generally an added expense, but makes it easy to just pop the memory card into the reader without having to use a USB connection--and thus preventing the drain on your camera battery.
  • Be sure to follow all the manufacturer's instructions and warnings regarding your camera and the USB jack.
  • Once you've uploaded your pictures, be sure to turn off your camera to save the battery. Leaving the camera plugged in to the computer can drain the battery very quickly.
  • If you have an older camera or computer operating system, there's a chance the computer might not recognize your camera. Just head over to the camera manufacturer's website and you should find a page there dedicated to drivers that you download to your computer.
