Try Out to Be a Cheerleader

One of the most exciting things for girls when they are entering middle school is the thought of being a cheerleader. Some people still consider cheerleading to be simply an extra curricular activity, however, cheerleading today is more of a sport than ever before. It requires endurance, stamina and strength to be a good cheerleader, along with a strong voice and personality. Follow these steps to discover how to try out to be a cheerleader.

From Quick Guide: Cheers for Cheerleading
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find out the date of the try out. There should be an organizational meeting with the cheerleading sponsor to give you all of the details of the cheerleader try out and also to teach you the try out cheer. Have a positive attitude while learning the cheer that you will use to try out.

  2. Step 2

Get a physical and start toning your body. Schools usually ask their athletes to get a physical exam to make sure that they are in good physical condition. You should get a physical from your family doctor, even if it isn’t required by your school. Do daily stretches and exercises to be in the best shape possible.

  3. Step 3

Learn some cheerleading jumps. You may be asked to perform at least one jump, if not a couple. Work on perfecting two or three, so that you will be prepared when they ask. Also, you should do a high kick and clap while you are entering the try out area. This is called "rallying" and a nice jump would be great as you get to your spot.

  4. Step 4

Practice the cheer over and over. Make sure to watch yourself in a mirror while you practice so that you can see your arm levels and positions. Practice with the voice that you will use. Be sure it is strong and a bit choppy; it should not be like you are singing. You can even arrange an evening with your family for a mock tryout in your living room.

  5. Step 5

Do your best at the tryouts. If you mess up any part of your cheer, be sure to pick back up where you can because this will show the judges that you are motivated and excited to cheer. Keep constant eye contact and smile throughout the whole tryout. Stand up straight while waiting to be asked to do your cheer. Keep good posture and a good attitude and the tryout will be a piece of cake.
