Things You'll Need:
- Portable water bowl
- A few treats or a chew toy
- Leash
- Well-behaved dog
-
Step 1
Before considering taking a dog to dine with you, make sure he or she has had plenty of obedience training and is well-socialized with other dogs, people, and especially children.
-
Step 2
Always call ahead or ask first to make sure an establishment allow dogs at their outdoor tables.
-
Step 3
Leash your four-legged friend to a chair leg and keep him or her from socializing with other diners or employees, unless welcomed. Keep him out of the server’s path at all times to avoid tripping or an accident when carrying dishes in or out. This should go without saying, but dogs are not allowed on the chairs or tables.
-
Step 4
Many restaurants have their own dog bowls, but you might want to bring your own to make sure it is clean. You can also ask the waiter for a paper or plastic bowl or cup for water if necessary. Pets cannot eat or drink out of restaurant glasses or dishes, unless they are disposable.
-
Step 5
Bring along some treats or chew toys to keep your dog entertained at the table and away from you and your fellow diners.
-
Step 6
In the event your dog has an accident, clean it up right away and apologize profusely. A dog that isn't house trained shouldn't be brought into any restaurant setting.
-
Step 7
A tired dog makes for a happy owner. Taking your dog for a long walk, run, or hike before bringing him or her along for dinner, will make everyone’s dining experience more pleasurable.
-
Step 1
Take your pup to a Yappy Hour at the Irie Bean Coffee Bar in South Austin. Hosted by one of Austin’s best dog trainers, Yappy Hours are held on the last Friday of every month from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Your dog can socialize with other four-legged friends and you can too, with other dog owners, that is. This would be a great test-run to see how well your pup responds to being around other dogs and people in a public setting.
-
Step 2
The patio at the Hotel San Jose on South Congress is a great place to socialize with friends and bring your dog along. The hotel has dog bowls and treats, as well as a fabulous cheese platter and wine list during Happy Hour.
-
Step 3
Austin Java not only has great coffee and healthy food, but a fantastic outdoor patio that is rarely without a dog or two. Their fountain serves as the water source to fill dog bowls with and people and dogs alike can spend hours enjoying the passersby on Barton Springs Road.
-
Step 4
Freddie’s Place on South First serves traditional American cuisine, but the large outdoor area has great picnic tables and a festive atmosphere to enjoy dinner with friends, two-and four-legged. Plus, you can play washers and participate in weekly washer tournaments if you’d like, with your dog as your number one fan.
