Texas is a state known for its cowboys and cattle. So, it comes as no surprise that its capital city, an historical meeting place for commerce and homesteading, boasts some of the best steakhouses in the country. Here are some of the local favorites to try.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Visit the Texas Roadhouse for an affordable steakhouse that the entire family can enjoy. Complete with peanut shells on the floor and freshly baked bread, the Roadhouse has a spirited atmosphere that lives up to its motto–“legendary food, legendary service.” All of their steaks are hand-cut and their award-winning ribs are fall off the bone tender. With three locations in Austin, there’s sure to be one near you.
Step2
Try III Forks, an award-winning steakhouse in downtown Austin, for truly indulgent steakhouse dining. The décor alone–black mahogany, triple crown molding, Italian marble, and a piano bar–exudes elegance and sophistication. They also feature a fantastic walk-in wine room with over 500 selections. But, as with anything in Austin, despite the elegance, the atmosphere also lacks pretension and stuffiness, allowing guests to enjoy the superb food and service.
Step3
Take a nostalgic trip back in time when you visit Sullivan’s, a 1940's styled steakhouse in downtown Austin that serves delicious food and exquisite martinis. The bar features live jazz entertainment nightly, as well as top shelf liquors and spirits, fine wines, and a cigar humidor stocked with choices to complement your evening.
Step4
The Lantana Bar and Grill (Photo Courtesy Horseshoe Bay Marriott Resort) Head out to Hill Country if you have time; the Lantana Grill and Bar is worth the 55-mile drive. Located within the Horseshoe Bay Marriott Resort, the Lantana is not a traditional steakhouse. Their Black Angus Filet will leave a lasting impression. Visit the bar for a before dinner cocktail or after dinner drink to take in the fantastic hill country and lake views. While dining, guests are entertained by the open, exhibition-style kitchen. To end the evening, nothing is better then following your steak dinner with Lantana's heavenly White Chocolate Bread Pudding.
Step5
Hang with the local and check out Texas Land & Cattle. You'll know you've arrived when you get to the parking lot--every two vehicles will be big Texas trucks. Walk inside, and you'll see the dozens of cowboys who are driving them. The ranch-like ambiance is perfect for a big, flavorful steak, with large fireplaces, hand-peeled split logs, and smoky aromas filling the dining rooms. The smoked meats are unlike any other. There are several locations in Austin.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask your server their opinion on the best cuts, sauces, or accompaniments. They should know the menu well and advise you on the best choices to satisfy your palette!
