Tie a Silk Scarf

Silk scarves are a beautiful way to accent an outfit, to bring color and style to neutral tones, and to draw attention to your face. Wear a scarf and you'll be noticed. Tying these soft silk scarves with just a regular knot ends up looking too small and lopsided, and a tight knot can crimp the delicate fabric. Read on to discover how to tie a silk scarf in three different attractive ways, without crinkling.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

    Square Scarf, Basic Knot

  1. Step 1

Lay one point over the other.

  2. Step 2

Take the overlaying point and fold it under, bringing it up through the newly formed loop around your neck.

  3. Step 3

Bring that same point over the top and drape it over.

  4. Step 4

Take that same point and slide it under the other point. You can see the loop for the knot forming.

  5. Step 5

Thread the point through that newly formed loop.

  6. Step 6

Tighten and you now have a perfectly symmetrical, smooth and attractive knot.

  7. Oblong Scarf, One-sided Knot

  8. Step 1

Make a loose knot on one end of the scarf, close to where you want the knot to be worn.

  9. Step 2

Adjust and tighten the knot slightly to get this nice, rounded look.

  10. Step 3

Carefully thread the other end of the silk scarf through this rounded knot.

  11. Step 4

Adjust knot to proper height. Wear the ends side by side or overlapping beneath this pretty, rounded knot. Keep the knot loose for a full look, and to keep the fabric from getting crimped.

  12. Oblong Scarf, Slide-through

  13. Step 1

Fold scarf in half, so the top is looped and the bottom ends are even with one another.

  14. Step 2

Wrap the folded scarf around your neck, with the loop on one side and the ends on the other.

  15. Step 3

Thread the ends through the loop.

  16. Step 4

Pull ends until loop fits comfortably around the neck. Attractive for day or evening styles, and also a great way to tie winter scarves.

Tips & Warnings
  • As with all knot tying, practice makes perfect. Where you make initial loops, how much you tighten the knot, and other subtle variations will change the look of the scarf. Experiment with your technique until you find just the right nuances that give you the perfect scarf knot.
