Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Personal computer
- Internet connection
Step1
Find your maximum memory. There are several sites available on the Internet to scan your computer system and tell you the maximum amount of memory your computer can hold. These sites will also tell the user the total amount of memory that is currently installed on the computer (see Resources below).
Step2
Choose your upgrade method. PC memory can be added through an internal and external method. If internal memory is needed, after you find the maximum allowed memory and the current memory levels, you will be able to purchase memory upgrades up to the maximum allowed amount of memory. For external memory upgrades there are no maximums. These units work through an available USB port and utilize memory in the form of an external drive.
Step3
Purchase the right memory. Each computer manufacturer uses a certain type of memory within their computers. Finding the right memory for your computer is essential to an internal upgrade. An electronics store or website can guide you in the right direction for the type of memory needed for your upgrade. The manufacturer website for your computer will also offer specs for the upgrade.
Step4
Install the internal memory. If internal memory is being upgraded you can choose to install the memory yourself or have a licensed computer tech install the memory. If you choose to install the internal memory on your own, follow the installation instructions provided with your computer. Make sure not to touch the computer memory board with bare hands and ground yourself by touching something metal before installing the memory. It is also advisable to unplug the computer before installing new memory.
