How to Do Atmospheric Pressure Science

This is cool experiment that the kids can participate in during class and also replicate at home. It teaches them about atmospheric pressure and the flow of water.

Things You'll Need

  • A large bowl of water
  • A tall glass

Instructions

    • 1

      Fill the bowl with water.

    • 2

Dunk the glass in the bowl sideways so that it fills with water.

    • 3

Ask the kids what they think is going to happen if you stand the glass upside down. Most kids will say that the water is going to pour out.

    • 4

Rotate the glass so that the bottom of the glass is directly above the top of the glass; notice that the water is staying inside the glass!

    • 5

Explain to the kids that the atmospheric pressure is so strong that it keeps the water from coming out of the glass. The weight of the water is less than the pressure, and therefore, the water stays in the glass.

    • 6

Have each student try it and then ask them to do the experiment at home for their parents.
