How to Make Big, Soft Pretzels

If you like big, soft pretzels -- the ones you can get at a ballgame or fair -- you can make them at home and enjoy them hot and fresh from the oven.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 3/4 tbsp. salt
  • 4 c. flour
  • 1 1/2 c. lukewarm water
  • 1 1/4 tsp. Sugar
  • Coarse pretzel salt
  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Meanwhile, cover a cookie sheet with foil & sprinkle it lightly with flour.

  • Soften the yeast in the warm water, then add the salt and sugar. Add 4 cups of flour and mix well to make dough.

  • Place the dough on a flat surface that has been covered with a thin layer of flour. Knead the dough until it is smooth, but do not let it rise.

  • Cut the dough immediately into small pieces, roll them into pencil thin ropes and twist them into pretzel-shaped knots.

  • Place the pretzels on the cookie sheet and brush them with beaten egg. Sprinkle them with the coarse pretzel salt.

  • Bake at 400 for 15 minutes or until light brown.

Tips & Warnings

  • Kids love to help make these pretzels.
  • Don't overcook them, they will be black on the bottom and not as soft.
