Most hotels want to accommodate the customer and will go great links to show that they are for the customer. Here are steps to take to try to get back your deposit for your canceled hotel room.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Canceled hotel reservation.
  • Desire to get deposit back.
  • Phone.

Step1
As soon as you know your travel plans has changed call your hotel.
Step2
Request money back. Look at the small print on your reservation email to find out the time line you need to follow to get your money back.
Step3
Hotels will usually give refunds to travelers that had to change plans due to a hospitalization or death in family. Some will require written proof but most will not, as long as the hotel reservations was canceled before early evening of your expected arrival.
Step4
If you do not meet qualifications above to get a refund, just ask. Make sure you are short and sweet to the hotel desk clerk. If they are unable to help you, request to talk to the manager in a positive tone. You may have to call back at a different time, or they may call you back. Be honest by telling them the reason you would like to cancel. Be short and sweet and then get to your point. Request your deposit back.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the manager does not allow refunds, request a change of date. With chain hotels, you usually can use the change of date at a hotel in the chain.
  • If you loose your cool, you are more than likely not going to get your deposit back.

on 5/9/2008 Excellent tips. A couple of years ago I lost money on one that we decided not to stay in (because it was in a bad neighborhood, the hotel was nasty and the room we reserved wasn't even clean!)
These tips would have helped! Will use in the future!
