Go to your bank where you have an account. Ask for rolls of coins. Halves - $10 Quarters - $10 Dimes - $5 Nickels - $2 Pennies - .50 Halves and quarters seem to be the favorite for finds. I suggest trying all of them. There are great old coins in all of them.
Step2
Start our one roll at a time. Make sure you keep separate the coins you have already sorted through. I reroll the coins as I go through them. If you have a free coin return at your bank you can just toss them in a bag or jar.
Step3
The "Keepers"! Here is what I look for and keep.
Halves-Everything dated 1970 or earlier. These are 90% silver. Also ones dated 1965-1970. These are 40% silver. I keep anything I find that is a non Kennedy (Franklins & Walkers)
Quarters-I save all quarters dated pre 1965.
Dimes-I save all dimes dated pre 1965. You can look at the rims and see if they are silver. This saves a lot of time. Also keep an eye out for merc's, these are dated 1916-1945.
Nickels-I keep all nickels pre dated 1956. Also keep an eye out for buffalos. Nickels dated 1942-1945 are "war nickels" and are also keepers.
Pennies-I keep all "wheaties". Pre 1959. Also keep an eye out for Indian heads.
Step4
Find a place for your keepers. Either buy books to hold them in or find a buyer to sell them to.
Tips & Warnings
Most coin roll hunters have multiple bank accounts and return coins to a different bank them they bought them from.
Use a bank that has free coin machines or you will end up spending money to return them.
