How to Make the Perfect Mother's Day Gift for Mom
Options for what gifts to give for Mother's Day are as varied as the moms who will receive them. One way to ensure that you're giving your mother the perfect gift is to give her something geared toward something she enjoys, such as a profession, interest or hobby. That way, it will be something practical and useful that she can use often or something that makes her think of you when she sees or uses it.

1
Make a gift basket centered on her hobby. Place shredded basket filler in the bottom of a basket, add your items, wrap with a sheet of cellophane and tie closed with a bit of ribbon. If your mom sews or knits, use such gifts as sewing needles, a pattern book, a couple of different colors of thread or yarn, a pretty pincushion and some thimbles. If she loves to barbecue, use shiny tongs, recipe cards or a barbecue recipe book, a bottle of a fancy or quirky barbecue sauce and an apron with a funny message on it.

2
Make a craft inspired by what she enjoys. Say your mom is a professor of Chinese history, or she enjoys vacationing in China. Have her name translated into Chinese characters, then paint the characters onto paper or a piece of canvas and frame. If your mom is always in the kitchen cooking, making a culinary-themed accent piece to sit on the counter. Remove the label from and wash a clear beer bottle; let thoroughly air dry; fill with uncooked beans, bulgur, rice, quinoa, shredded coconut, dried fruit or candies and seal by screwing or hammering the cap back on, pouring in some glue or jamming in a cork.

Make a gift specific to mom's favorite beverage. If she's a coffee lover, give a goodie-filled coffee mug. Buy a mug with a picture or message she'll like. Add a "Happy Mother's Day" balloon and gifts that will fit inside: jewelry, gift cards, perfume or a rolled-up scarf. If she's a connoisseur of wine, give her an engraved wine glass filled with foods she can enjoy with her wine: individually wrapped pieces of homemade fudge, mini brownies, bite-sized cookies, a pack of gourmet cheese crackers or a small bag of dried fruit.

Make mom's career a party. For example, if she's a physician or works in a medical setting, throw a Mother's Day Doctor's Party. Decorate by setting out packages of bandages, toy stethoscopes and stacks of rolled gauze. Hang signs such as "Nurses' Lounge," "Waiting Room," "X-Rays in Progress" and "Intensive Care" and posters from such TV shows as "Grey's Anatomy," "House," "ER" and "Scrubs." Fill a vase filled with medical tongs, cotton balls, tongue depressors and boxes of Band-Aids for a centerpiece on the food table. Send guests on a scavenger hunt for hidden empty pill bottles. Have medical-themed trivia and karaoke with songs including "Calling Doctor Love," by KISS; "Dr. Feelgood," by Aretha Franklin; "Like A Pill," by Pink; and "Doctor Doctor," by the Thompson Twins. Serve Doctor Daiquiris and Pediatric Punch, Surgery Sandwiches, Pulmonary Potato Salad and Cardiovascular Cupcakes.
