How to Sterilize Kitchen Sponges and Plastic Scrubbers

Your kitchen sponges can build up bacteria, like E. Coli. Bacteria can cling to the damp sponge, where it will easy grow. You can clean sponges in the dishwasher, but better yet, there is a way to decontaminate bacteria on sponges and on plastic scrubbers.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Kitchen sponge or plastic scrubber
  • Microwave
  1. Step 1
    Kitchen Scrubber

    Wet the sponge or plastic scrubber with water. Squeeze excess water from the sponge.

  2. Step 2

    Place the wet sponge and/or plastic scrubber into your microwave. Remember, there should be no metal or steel placed into a microwave.

  3. Step 3
    Microwave
    Microwave

    Run the microwave for two minutes on full power.

  4. Step 4

    And the end of two minutes, the sponges/scrubbers will be very warm, but bacteria free and ready to be removed from the microwave.

  5. Step 5

    Repeat the process every other day to keep your sponge bacteria free. And microwave your toothbrush too, but for only 10 SECONDS to keep it bacteria-free.

Tips & Warnings
  • The sponge or scrubber may be hot at the end of the two-minute microwave cycle, so be cautious when taking them from the microwave.
