Begin by asking the question “How can I help you?”. For some people if you go and research therapists in the area and then give that list to the sufferer they may feel like you are sticking your nose in and treating them as though they are helpless, for others they will be very grateful that you care enough to do this for them but the only way to know is if you ask. When you ask what you can do and explain to someone that you are not sure how to help but you would like some guidance from them, it empowers them and shows respect.
Step2
Exercise Together. Its GREAT for the immune system and fights of depression by producing a wonderful natural high!
Step3
Be there to listen. When they open up to you just allow them to be heard without giving advice. A lot of people find it very difficult to just listen, if you do try putting your hand on your stomach and remind yourself to breathe. This is one simple technique that I teach all new counselling students
Step4
Allow them time to be alone is that is what helps them, but again ask them if that’s what they want.
Step5
Take care of yourself well so that you can take care of them. Your strength will give them strength. Be an example!
