How to use timeout properly.

Most parents wonder why the timeout process doesn't work when trying to discipline their children. Using this technique, you will be able to see great progress with your child's behavior.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Love
  • Patience
  • Tolerance

Step1
First find out exactly what behaviors you want to eliminate. Write them down and make sure you apply this process for each time the child displays one of those behaviors.
Step2
Find an appropriate area with no distractions and minimal stimulations. For example, a chair facing the corner. This will be known as the "timeout" area.
Step3
When the child displays an inappropriate behavior, keep your voice calm, never raise it. Tell them to go to the "timeout" area. If the child refuses or throws a tantrum, ignore it at all costs. Do not talk to them while they are in a tantrum. Wait it out, no matter how long it takes. Once they are done, tell them again to go the the "timeout" area. This may take several times, but stick to your guns. Do not show any signs that what they are doing in the tantrum is affecting you.
Step4
Give one minute for each year of the child's age. For example, if the child is three years old, then the timeout should last three minutes. During this time, do not talk to the child. Once the time is up, explain to him/her what they have done wrong and let them out of the "timeout" area.
