Memorial Day offers an excellent opportunity to teach the young (and remind us all) of the gallantry, bravery and sacrifices our fellow Americans have made. Here are five easy ways get kids involved.
Buy a flag and learn all about it BEFORE hanging it up. Use the Internet to research the proper care and respect a flag deserves; when to take it down, lower it, how to fold it, and why so many revere and honor the flag. Play a game too see who can name the most states associated with each star or the original thirteen states represented by each stripe.
Step2
Create a family tree. Cut out green construction paper leaves, write the names of each family member on the leaves and glue on a poster board "tree trunk" in the appropriate order. Family members who have served in the military get gold leaves as recognition. Add pictures and stories if you can.
Step3
Attend parades and events in your town to commemorate the day. Or, create a neighborhood parade with multiple families. Encourage everyone to join in wearing patriotic colors, make homemade wagon or bike "floats" and carry the flag held high.
Step4
Create a tape or CD of music that represents the honor of America. Search the Internet, use movie soundtrack or your music collection to find civil war battle songs, John Phillips Sousa marches, patriotic concerts, songs of protest and songs of support. Combine them together for your own special collection and be certain to finish with Francis Scott Key's "Star Spangled Banner."
Step5
Simply say "Thank You." Visit a cemetery and recognize that many people; young, old, men and women, gave everything for our freedom. Say "Thank You" to them by remembering their name and their dedication.
