With gas prices going through the roof, people are looking for cheaper means of travel. Amtrak could be the answer to that dilemma.
By the way, school is almost out and the kiddos would definitely enjoy a train trip.
Go To The Amtrak Website: http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/HomePage
Step2
Click On The "Routes" Tab
On the left hand side of the page you will see "Browse By Region"
California Midwest Northeast Northwest South West
Click On the region that you live in
Step3
Now that you are on the "Browse By Region" page, you should see a region map. Underneath the map is a chart that includes "Route Names." Click on the Route Name closest to your hometown. This should bring you to a page that includes the "Staions Served."
Step4
View the "Stations Served" list and find the closest city to your home town. Click on that city or town.
Step5
This should bring you to a page that has the "Fare Finder" on the right hand side.
Key in the necessary information to get the fare from your town to that closest city.
I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how cheap the rates are and how much you will save by not driving.
Step6
Once you have your fares, Google the name of your destination city and find the local attractions.
Now you are ready to have a great time and at the same time save a lot of money.

Finding alternative ways to get from A to B is becoming increasingly important. I'm glad to see that people are communicating these! Keep them coming!
