Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Things You’ll Need:
- friends with experience
- realistic and practical budget
- proper tools for the job
- patience and a good back
Step1
Older homes can be a nightmare to remodel. Unless you are in the field as a Carpenter, Electrician, Plumber or all of your school buddies are then take a serious second look before you start. It is better to hire a professional, even though more expensive, because the job will get done right and in half the time. Simple things like painting and cleaning can be done by yourself.
Step2
I have an old Farm House built in the 1870's which has been remodeled quite a few times and an addition was added in about 1940's. I think my house is bi-polar. Paneling everywhere! I hate paneling! So why did I move in? It was cheap and I thought i could do the work. If you are younger and the most physical work you do is checking your email and opening your refrigerator door then this is definitely NOT for you. Think twice before you start.
Step3
Doing the work your self is more time consuming and actually quite boring unless your friends are over drinking your free beer and eating Pizza. Tearing down is lot's of fun and easy to do. No brainer. This is actually quite therapeutic. What the shock may be is what you find behind those old walls. Safety is also an issue. You don't want to knock out a support wall for instance and find yourself sleeping outside in a Tent. Weather also has a lot to do with it. Roofing can be easy but not in 100 degree weather. Spring or fall is more suitable for that.

on 7/6/2008 Ah Yes, another person of remodeling distinction. It sounds as if you have learned something, young acorn. It really isn't as easy as the 'fast food' home improvement stores would like you to believe. This is also why I have a consultation radio show. Your worthy advise to those who think "you can do it, we can sell you something" would be welcome 'addition' to the house of construction Talk/Radio. Google 'Ken Swanson'.
