Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeder

Having trouble keeping your resident squirrels out of your bird feeders? Since these clever critters with insatiable appetites are nature's finest acrobats, trying to outwit them isn't easy! Don't worry, it's not as difficult as you might think. With a few simple modifications to your bird feeders you can squirrel-proof them once-and-for-all - GUARANTEED! Here's how...

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Stove Piping
  • Tin Flashing
  • Tin Snippers
  • Nails, screws or a staple gun
  1. Step 1

Wrap your bird feeder's entire post or pole with tin or aluminum stove piping. These pieces will connect to each other and lock in place.

  2. Step 2

Cut a piece of tin flashing long enough to go around your feeder's platform and so that it will hang down about 12 to 36 inches (as shown). Then, starting at the back of your feeder's platform, wrap and attach the tin flashing to the platform. Small nails, screws or a staple gun will work just fine.

  3. Step 3

Cut another piece of tin flashing that's as wide as the back of your feeder. Attach it to the back of the feeder's platform so that it looks like a 12-18 inch flap sticking out of the back (as shown).

That's it - that's all there is to it!

  4. Step 4

If your bird feeder doesn't stick out from your post or pole and instead sits on the very top of it, simply cut and attach pieces of tin flashing to the bottom (as shown).

  5. Step 5

If you have hanging bird feeders you can use PVC piping and a squirrel dome (as shown).
