Step 1
Make sure your detergent shakes in the box. If it's clumpy, it won't dissolve properly. Store soap away from under the sink--the heat and moisture make it damp. Buying smaller boxes helps but it's more economical to buy the big ones. Dump the detergent in a pail with a tight lid and use a small scoop with it instead.
-
Step 2
Run the water until it's hot before you start the dishwasher. This prevents it from washing with cold water and setting foods on for the first wash.
-
Step 3
Don't run the washing machine and the dishwasher at the same time. Don't let anyone take baths or showers when its running either. Turn it on when you go to bed to prevent changing temps in the shower or not enough hot water to do a good job in the dishwasher.
-
Step 4
Use less detergent for softer water. Too much soap clouds glassware and doesn't really clean anything well. Extra hard dishes may have to be soaked in vinegar from time to time to prevent buildup on them.
-
Step 5
Don't overfill your machine. Check your booklets for instructions. Overloading causes jets to be blocked which results in missed spots on dishes. Cramming silverware will also cause it to come out dirty.
-
Step 6
Rinse dishes well for older machines. Rinse any food off of them for any dishwashers as this clogs the machine. Clean the filter regularly to prevent dirty dishes and too much strain on the appliance as well.
-
Step 7
Run the dishwasher--empty--with powdered orange or lemon drink mix in the soap receptacle to clean the inside of the machine.
-
Step 8
Using these hints will ensure that your dishwasher cleans it's best and lasts as long as possible, saving you time, aggravation, extra work and, of course, money.

on 12/21/2008 Turning it on when you go to bed is a great tip. That is something I've made a habit. Great tips.
