At some point during high school, most students find themselves needing a letter of recommendation from a teacher. Whether applying for a job, admission to college, or for a scholarship, a really good letter of recommendation can make a difference in the selection process. Follow the steps below to make sure that you get the best letter possible from your teacher.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A list of your accomplishments, awards, activities, club memberships, volunteer activities.
  • The exact criteria for the particular application the letter will support.
  • A stamped, addressed envelope for mailing the letter.

Step1
Make your request early, well in advance of the deadline for submission. The more time your teacher has to think about your background and review the information you give her, the better job she will do in writing your letter. Selection committees can spot a quickly thrown together, cookie cutter type letter. You want a letter that sets you apart from the crowd, so give your teacher plenty of time.
Step2
Assemble all the necessary materials you will need to present to the teacher. These should include the list of your accomplishments and activities, the exact criteria for the letter you are requesting, and the envelope ready for mailing. The criteria should include what you are applying for, who the letter should be addressed to, what areas the organization would like for the teacher to address, and the deadline for the application. Most applications include a section that explains in detail the criteria to be used. You could simply make a copy of that section to give to the teacher.
Step3
When ready to make your request, have all the materials in a folder clearly marked with your name. Try to approach the teacher at a time when she isn't distracted. She may want to ask you some questions and if she is busy with other activities, she won't be free to do so. When you have her attention, tell her what you are applying for and ask if she would be willing to write a letter of recommendation for you. Present the folder containing all necessary materials, letting her know that you have done some preparatory work that might help her in writing the letter. Finally, be sure to thank her and tell her how much you appreciate her taking the time to help you.

Tips & Warnings

  • A week or two after you have requested your letter, a gentle reminder to the teacher would be a good idea. Very politely tell her that you'd just like to remind her that the deadline for your letter is approaching and you want to make sure that she has everything she needs to complete it.
  • Be sure to send the teacher a thank-you note. Certainly not necessary, but a nice touch that will definitely be appreciated.
