Flowing between poses in Vinyasa requires three things: Continual breath engagement, continual movement and visualization. Vinyasa means flow, so you must both flow the breath and the pose--even between poses!

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yoga mat
  1. Step 1

Start in Warrior I and continue to work your way deeper into the pose, extending your arms out overhead and bending your front leg deeper into a 90-degree angle. To prepare to flow, ignite the breath before you transition into the next pose. Continue to extend the body even after you've technically arrived at the proper alignment of the pose. Continue to extend your limbs and connect with your breath.

  2. Step 2

Work each pose deeper. This will give you more space to transition into poses or flow into the next pose. When in Warrior I and preparing for Warrior II, think of the transition as a continual flow between the two poses. Use the breath to help initiate the pose.

  3. Step 3

Utilize the Ujjayi breath or vibrant breath. The Ujjayi breath consists of deep inhales and exhales that make an audible hissing sound. Ujjayi breath helps deepen the poses and aids in the flow between the poses. The breath work is an integral part of Vinyasa yoga and the sequencing of the poses. Breathe deeply. Breathe well.

  4. Step 4

Visualize yourself continuing to grow in each pose. If you are in full wheel or in forearm stand, visualize yourself extending higher, your body working its way closer to the ceiling. Visualizing will help you flow between poses as there won't be a specific beginning or end to any pose.

  5. Step 5

Think of your Vinyasa practice and your efforts to connect the poses as an ongoing cycle. Utilize breath and visualization techniques to help you gain momentum.

Tips & Warnings
  • Breathe between all poses.
  • Visualize yourself growing in each pose.
  • Be mindful when practicing yoga and be aware or your body's limitations.
