Instructions

    • 1

Chop your vegetables to the desired size. The larger the pieces, the longer they will take to steam.

    • 2

Heat a large pot or pan on medium-high. The vessel does not have to be deep, but there should be enough space so that most of the vegetable pieces touch the bottom of the pan.

    • 3

Add the vegetables to the heated pot or pan and add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water.

    • 4

Cover and let cook for several minutes.

    • 5

Check your vegetables. If they are not as tender as you want, replace the cover and cook until desired consistency is reached. If all the water has evaporated, add a very small amount before replacing cover.

    • 6

Remove from heat and serve once desired consistency is reached.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add a small amount of cooking oil to the pan when you heat it, especially if not using a non-stick pan.

  • If the vegetables start to brown, the heat is too high. Lower the temperature of your pan and continue cooking.

This is a great idea, and a very well-written and informative article. I don't have a steamer either so I'll be trying this.

If you put about a tablespoon of vinegar into the steaming water, it changes the smell significantly, but then the broccoli doesn't taste like broccoli any more. I know people who like that, and use the cooked broccoli as a salad base after that, but I LIKE broccoli and the vinegar kind of de-broccolizes it.
