Puerto Rico has long been one of the world's most popular boardgames among serious gamers. Thankfully, an expansion was released to breathe new life into the game and create many new strategies.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Puerto Rico board game
  • Puerto Rico expansion pieces (free download)
  1. Step 1

Go to the Rio Grande games site and download the expansion pieces (link below). You will need to cut the pieces out. Either print them on high-quality cardstock or paste the pieces onto cardstock or cardboard to give them some decent weight.

  2. Step 2

Begin the game by lining up all the purple pieces off of the board. Players take turns choosing one purple building type to go on the board. Once all open slots for a certain cost building have been filled, all the buildings not chosen of that price are placed back in the box and will not be part of this game. Once all buildings have been chosen, game play begins as normal.

  3. Step 3

Be aware that many players find drafting at the beginning of the game slow or confusing. There are a few commonly used variants to avoid this. One thing you can do is simply play with all of the expansion buildings and none of the standard purple buildings (aside from three large buildings). This eliminates any drafting and lets you get a feel for all of the new buildings right away.

  4. Step 4

Know that another option is to include one of every purple building. This will still let you see how all the new buildings work, not only with themselves, but also in synergy with the standard buildings. It also introduces an element of time-pressure into the game, since any given building can only be gotten by one player.

  5. Step 5

Know that some players like to have all buildings available for purchase. When two (or four) buildings of a certain cost have been built, simply remove the rest of the buildings of that cost from the game. This allows players the most freedom in purchasing their buildings, deciding as they go what will be most useful for them.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you plan to play a lot, it may be worth paying for the professional expansion pieces; $4 is not a lot to pay for a great revival of a great game.
  • If you print out the free pieces yourself, they may be easily lost or bent. (Then again, you can always print more.)
