How to Store Rice

Rice is an incredible food--rich in B vitamins, it is eaten throughout the developed and developing world alike. In order to enjoy both its full health benefits and its delicious flavor, though, proper storage is essential.

Instructions

    • 1

Store unopened rice in its original package in a freezer for 3 to 7 days if you plan on storing it for an extended period. This will kill any bug infestation, and afterwards you can store in a cool, clean space. Also do this if you buy rice in bulk.

    • 2

Use airtight containers to store rice in a cool place once you've opened it. For short periods, however, keep the rice in a non-airtight container that allows it to breathe.

    • 3

Store the rice in a shallow, airtight or covered container after it has been cooked.

    • 4

Refrigerate or freeze the cooked rice. Refrigerated rice keeps for a week, and frozen rice for approximately 6 months.

Tips & Warnings

  • Brown rice contains more oils than milled white rice, which makes it spoil more quickly. For extended periods of storage, it should be stored in a refrigerator or freezer.
