In yoga, thoracic breathing (also known as chest breathing) helps to release tension. Follow these steps to learn how.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Sit in a comfortable, meditative position, and observe your normal breath: your chest expands and contracts by using the diaphragm.

  2. Step 2

Try to discontinue the use of the diaphragm for this exercise. Begin to breathe, instead, by expanding the rib cage.

  3. Step 3

Inhale and expand and lift the rib cage as much as possible. Fill your lungs as much as you can, and hold this breath for a moment.

  4. Step 4

Exhale and relax the chest muscles. Fully empty your lungs as much as possible. Keep the abdomen still; move only your chest.

  5. Step 5

    Repeat for 20 breaths.
