Step 1
Sit in a comfortable, meditative position, and observe your normal breath: your chest expands and contracts by using the diaphragm.

Try to discontinue the use of the diaphragm for this exercise. Begin to breathe, instead, by expanding the rib cage.

Step 3
Inhale and expand and lift the rib cage as much as possible. Fill your lungs as much as you can, and hold this breath for a moment.

Step 4
Exhale and relax the chest muscles. Fully empty your lungs as much as possible. Keep the abdomen still; move only your chest.

Step 5
Repeat for 20 breaths.
